The Road to Profitability — Designing a Healthcare Business that Works for You.

I use a sketchbook to map out my desire and vision for my businesses.

I use a sketchbook to map out my desire and vision for my businesses.

I feel really nervous and vulnerable admitting this, but...

I lost money the first 3 years I ran a chiropractic business.

My family was so poor that we all qualified for state sponsored health insurance and food stamps. After 8 years in business, it was a little better, but I still wasn’t seeing a profit.

Instead, I was struggling and just didn’t know how to move forward.

Looking back, my problem was trying to be everything to everyone.

I was taking every single group insurance plan, trying to attract as many patients as possible to create a high volume business. You know — basically following traditional business models for my profession. I was told this approach would make me successful, but it just didn’t work for me.

I was passionate about helping people, passionate about the power of chiropractic to help people heal naturally. But the business side of things just never felt right.

I was depressed, overwhelmed, and burned out.

My doctor prescribed anti-anxiety medications and anti-depressant medications. They did help me get thru a tough time, but I became numb. Numb to joy. Numb to sadness. Numb to myself. And numb to my husband.

It was not a happy life.

How could I love my profession so much, yet find the business side of it so miserable? I was afraid, but I didn’t want to give up. I was determined to find a way to be profitable AND happy. I loved my work, so I would find a way.

I began to envision a business that would work for me, and today I’m profitable at every visit.

My practice is filled with ideal patients I love to serve.

I’m proud to say that I am able to support my family financially as the breadwinner. I wake up energized and look forward to treating my patients. Getting here meant leaving behind the traditional business model which was not working for me. As a business coach, this is what I advise for most business-owning women — design your business to work with your life.

The key was making my life more focused, and my business more simple.

I realized I needed to build a business that aligned with who I really am as a helper and a healer. I needed to make money to take care of my family. Most of all, I needed to feel good about the way I ran my business. Since the traditional vision that was set out for me was not working, I had to define a new vision for a business that supported my life and my family. That was the first step, and what an important step it was.

Step 1 for profitability — define YOUR desire and vision

...because you can’t get what you want until you know what you want.

Instead of trying to fit into a prescribed healthcare business role, I encourage my coaching clients to spend time getting real with themselves. Really real — about who they are, and what they can and cannot do. I want them to really understand what gives them energy and what’s draining their life away.

The only way to avoid burnout is to design a business that works with your life.

When it comes to managing my chiropractic business, desire and vision are where I spend the most time. Several mornings a week I ask myself, “What do I want right now? What do I want for my business, my marriage, my community, and my home?” I also consider which resources I need to make those desires reality.

I have a set of journal prompts that I go through on a regular basis.

I continue focusing on getting clear on what I want and which core values I am working towards.

I’ve found that defining my core values sets the foundation for profit, and supports my wellbeing and happiness.

When you define your core values, you design your business compass to point the way.

Once you define your desires and set a vision based on your values, you create a foundation for less stress. You know where to show up and how to spend your time. You have a line of questioning to run all of your marketing decisions through. You’re clear on what to do and what not to do.

Defining my core values has reduced my cognitive load and saved my decision-making energy for other high-value activities. It works like this —

“Hey, Dr. Goldi, we have this charity run to help raise money for youth activities. Can you come and provide services?” Heck Yeah! That supports all my core values and attracts some of my ideal clients — happy, active families.

— Vs. —

“Hi Dr. Goldi, we’re having a chamber fair for crafts and art. Could you have a booth here?” While I personally like arts and crafts, my core values cause me to ask, “are my business values in alignment with that event?” No? I’ll pass on that and put my energy where it helps my business grow.

I know where to put my energy to make a profit AND support my vision for my life.

Step 1 for profitability keeps things simple, keeps me focused, and saves my energy for what I love to do most — serve my patients.

I’d love to share my visioning journal prompts with you.

If you’re ready to make big changes in your life and your practice, this is the place to start.

I have coaching clients who are wanting more than to work hard, pay all the business bills, and have little to nothing left to take home. They want to design a business that supports their chosen lifestyle and their families.

Maybe you’ve been an associate for years and want to start your own practice. Or you’ve had a private practice, but now you’ve married and want to start a family. Many of my coaching clients have moved to a new state and wonder, “How do I start up a practice all over again?”

New life stages require new visions.

I’ve got the journal prompts to help you establish that new vision. Ready to claim your desires and set your vision? Get your free journal prompts here.
